​原種オダマキ（アクイレギア）

オダマキ属は北半球の亜寒帯から温帯にかけて約70種が知られています。多年草ですが、多くは寿命が短く、2〜3年で株を更新していきます。
葉は1〜3回の3出複葉で、小葉は扇形、葉の先が2・3に中裂し、裂片がさらに2・3に浅裂します。
花色は白、青、紫、黄、赤など多彩で、花は横向きから俯きに咲き、花弁と萼片は5枚あります。花弁には距があり、花の後ろに長く突き出ています。
黒い種子を内包する5個の袋果が稔ります。

属名はラテン語のaqula（鷲という意味）から生じたといわれており、距の先が巻いているのを鷲の爪を連想させるからと言われています。またラテン語のaqua（水）とlegere（集める）という造語で、距の中にたまる密に由来するという説もあります。
和名は花の様子が、糸を紡ぐ前に糸をボール状に巻いたもの、苧環（苧手巻、お・だまき）に似ているからと言われています。
